![]() ![]() Nancy watches Steve but not too much, vibrantly aware of Jonathan watching her watch Steve. It sounds awful even just in Nancy’s mind, but she assumed he’d be fine by now. Steve bounced back so quickly before - the last time he was beaten bloody. Weeks since that awful night when everything went wrong, and yet Steve’s bruises are still blue around his tired eyes. The kids, Nancy, Steve, and Jonathan all missed the next week of school for healing and government debriefs and funerals, and the week after that they had off for Thanksgiving. ![]() With Jonathan.” Luckily, it was like the monsters had set their schedule by the school calendar the final showdown happened the first week of November. It’s been a little more than two weeks since the Mind Flayer, since Will had a monster burned out of him, since Steve caught Nancy outside the Byers’ house and said, “You should go with him. Nancy watches flashes of what look like nausea cross his face, and wonders if he’s been eating when he’s home alone. ![]() The silence is a little less strained this time, and Steve forces down bites of lukewarm pizza. He’s always grungy but now he looks dangerous, wild eyes covering something worse underneath. His face, in contrast to Steve’s, is still battered blue around his mouth, and his neck has a horrible stab mark from Max’s needle. “Can’t let him win, can I?” Steve says, again not looking anywhere in particular, but clearly talking about Billy. “You did a good job, I wouldn’t have noticed.” “Really?” Nancy reaches across the table, takes his chin and tilts it. “Well, it should, because I stole my mom’s makeup to cover it up,” Steve says. “Your, um,” she gestures to her own face, “bruising, it looks better.” ![]() Jonathan’s smile dims a little, but he says, “Good… well. “If I have one thing, at least I now have the undying loyalty of a twelve-year-old,” Steve sighs. “Dustin called every hour for the first two days, including through the night, in case I had a concussion,” Steve says dryly. They eat in silence for a minute, Jonathan and Nancy pointedly not looking at each other, and Steve picking at his wilted salad and greasy, square-cut pizza. “Don’t worry about it,” Nancy says quietly. The rest of the cafeteria is abuzz with the development of Steve ostracized, of Billy at the throne of the popular table. and Carol hang onto his words like disciples to a new god. He doesn’t gesture, but he doesn’t have to: over his shoulder, Billy Hargrove is watching them like an anesthetized lion, ready to swipe if his unlucky prey gets too close but unable to move closer to them on his own. “This is weird, sorry,” he says, voice a little bitter. He fiddles with his fork and looks up at them from beneath his lashes. Steve clatters his lunch tray to the dingy cafeteria table and sits, hunching over a little, like he can use his shoulders as a shield against the whispers and glances. Nancy flicks a glance at Jonathan, who looks similarly surprised. She doesn’t know if she’s more surprised to see him standing here in front of their table, or here in the cafeteria at all. “Is this seat taken?” He shifts his weight awkwardly, grimacing a little.
